![]() It is a common question for a newbie that how to setup/charge a humidifier of a humidor. I got more than 10 emails to write on it. Every cigar lover should have a humidor, no matter you are a newbie or veteran. You have to put your cigar into a humidor to keep them fresh. You need to setup your humidor before going to store cigar which is known as seasoning. You see the article on how to season your humidor from Cigar Accessories Review blog. Today, I am writing a part of seasoning- how to charge the humidifier? At first, remove the humidifier from the humidor. Next, put the humidifier into a solution of distilled water and propylene glycol. The ratio of the solution should be 50/50. You just need to damp the humidifier, not need to be soaked during the process. Then, use a clean towel to dry the humidifier. Make sure that there is no excess liquid to come out. Now your humidifier is charged for next few month. Just replace it into its position. You can use either the 50/50 propylene glycol solution or activator solution available in the market. The activator solution is ready to use after purchase it. Activator solution is available from many companies like Cigar Caddy, Xikar Dave etc. You don’t need to create the solution at home, just buy one of these. Just a few squirts of your activator solution is enough to charge your humidifier for a few month. Why do you need to use an Activator Solution or Propylene Glycol Solution? To maintain the inside atmosphere of the humidor, you need to use a hygrometer, thermometer, and humidifier. To charge your humidifier, you need to use activator solution or propylene glycol solution instead of distilled water alone. Because the distilled water is not appropriate to control the humidity levels correctly. If your humidifier fails to maintain the humidity levels correctly then it can ruin your valuable cigars. Instead of using distilled water, you should make a solution of 50% propylene glycol and 50% distilled water. There is some benefit of using this solution. This solution works in two ways. The propylene glycol can absorb the moisture from the environment and also can release moisture if needed. So, when the humidor going to dry, it releases moisture to prevent the humidor becoming dry. Again, when the humidity levels of the humidor increase, it absorbs the excess humidity. Thus, the propylene glycol keeps the environment stable. Another advantage of this solution is that this solution prevents the growth of mold. The mold is a big problem for the humidor and you can keep them away by using this solution. Now, I believed that you have understood the benefits of using propylene glycol solution.
